FAQs: Who can join? Anyone! Our unit is open to anyone who has a love for history, no matter your age or background. The 19th Virginia is a family friendly organization, so if you got family members who might be interested as well, invite them to join as well! Once I join, where do I get the proper gear? The place you can purchase the uniforms and gear are what reenactors call sutlers. Sutlers sell all the period gear you need. This hobby is expensive but the company has loaner gear you can use so you don't have to buy all that you need right off the bat. How old do I have to be to take the field? We are part of the 1st Division, ANV, and by the regulations, you must be at least 14 years old to carry a musket on the field. Anyone 12 to 14 can also take the field but must be a functioning musician (drum, fife, bugle, etc.) Are women allowed to fight? During the Civil War, it is estimated that 400 to 700 women disguised as men to join both armies. Women are allowed to take the field as combatants, but like the original soldiers, you must make the best effort to disguise yourself. What can I do at the events? Well that depends on what you are most comfortable with. You can take the field as a soldier and participate in the drills and battles, as well as the recreation of daily camp life. If you are unable to take the field with a musket, or want to do something else as well, you are more than welcome to ask. We are always looking for field musicians to take the field, or there might be something you wish to portray and demonstrate in the camps. Is there a certain numbers I have to attend to maintain membership? Not at all. Though we all love the hobby, life always come first. If you can make only one event a year, that is fine. As long as you enjoy yourself, we do not worry about how many events you attend.
